Dalton High cheerleading took first place in its classification and was the overall grand champion during the Lady Catamounts? season-opening competition Saturday at Coosa High in Rome.
Dalton was the top team in Class 4A ? with its score of 215 outdoing the 200 for Cedartown, the only other 4A team present ? and had the best result in the field of a dozen teams.
?It?s really early to be competing,? Dalton coach Tami Fleming said. ?Most schools won?t compete for another three weeks, so I?m excited they got out there today and did so well.?
Dalton finished third in Region 7-3A last season to advance to state sectionals in Columbus for the fifth straight year, then qualified for finals and took sixth in Class 3A.
Volleyball
? Southeast Whitfield won its pool and finished as the tournament runner-up out of 12 total teams competing at the Georgia Challenge in Alpharetta.
The Lady Raiders, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A in the latest Ga.PrepCountry.com/GACA coaches poll, swept pool games over Cambridge and Sequoyah before needing three games to beat Class 6A power East Coweta in the semifinals. However, the Lady Raiders saw their night end as defending Class 6A state champions Walton took a 25-12, 25-12 victory in the championship game.
?We knew Walton was a top team, and they are at another level,? Southeast coach Jake Dickey said. ?We are 13-3 on the year, and we have lost twice to Baylor, who will probably win a state title in Tennessee, and once to a team favored to repeat in the biggest classification in our state.?
In pool play, the Lady Raiders beat Cambridge 25-15, 25-17 and topped Sequoyah 25-19, 25-22. Southeast advanced to the Gold Bracket semifinals and lost the opening game to East Coweta 25-16. But the Lady Raiders rallied to sweep the next two games 25-23, 15-10.
?It was just a fun game,? Dickey said. ?It went back and forth in that second game after we got an early lead. In the third game, they got up on us and we rallied to tie it at 8-8 and then Megan (Collins) went to serve and we started rolling. (East Coweta?s) defense was amazing and their setter was really on top of her game.?
Collins led the way for the Lady Raiders with 47 kills and 47 digs, while Wendy Perez and Serena Ramsey finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Hannah Graham had 10 kills, 25 digs and 61 assists from her setter spot. Yasmeen Paloblanco had 46 digs, while MaKayla Burse finished with 34.
? Christian Heritage finished second at Coahulla Creek?s Volley at the Creek tournament, which included four other local teams.
The Lady Lions lost in the championship to a Calhoun team it beat earlier in the day. Calhoun won 25-12, 18-25, 20-25. Christian Heritage (10-6) was undefeated up to that point with wins against North Murray (25-17, 25-12), Heritage-Catoosa (16-25, 27-25, 25-18), Calhoun (25-23, 25-23), Northwest Whitfield?s JV squad (25-14, 25-2) and Ringgold (26-24, 21-25, 25-18).
?We didn?t have our one middle player today,? Lady Lions coach Kim Parsons said, ?and Calhoun has two tall players, and they were playing really well that last game. We just couldn?t block them.?
Christian Heritage?s Jessica Seehorn, Savannah Roberson and Brenna Mugge were named to the tournament?s All-Star team. Additional stats were not available.
?They played really well,? Parsons said. ?They played excellent against Ringgold and Calhoun in the morning and then played well against Heritage. They were moving well, and that is exciting to see.?
Coahulla Creek (8-14) went 2-2 in the tournament. It beat Murray County 25-17, 25-8 and Northwest?s JV team 25-14, 25-17. The Lady Colts lost to Ringgold 19-25, 13-25 and Calhoun 20-25, 25-17, 24-26. Becca Bailey had 33 assists, three digs and seven aces. Casey Quarles had 10 kills, four aces and one block. Gabby Henderson had seven kills, four digs and two aces. Softball
? Northwest (17-2) finished second in the Cherokee County Invitational at Twins Creek Park in Woodstock.
The highlight was a dramatic 3-2 quarterfinals victory against Whitewater where the Lady Bruins used a tying home run in the last inning and a walkoff single to beat the team who eliminated them in last year?s Class 4A state playoffs.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth and with time expired, Bayli Cruse hit a home run to tie it. Northwest won in the seventh due to the international tiebreaker where the last out from the previous inning starts on second. Mallory Souther reached third on a sacrifice bunt and Colbie Thomas got a hit with two outs. Thomas and Cruse each went 2-for-3. Emily Boyd pitched seven innings, struck out 10 and allowed one earned run off four hits.

In Friday?s win against Hillgrove, Boyd pitched all seven innings, struck out 14 and allowed only two hits. Mykeah Johnson was 2-for-3, and Thomas had a two-run, inside-the-park home run.

In the third-place game, Dalton beat Adairsville 5-0 behind Blackwood?s two hits and Hagin?s five strong innings pitching, allowing only two hits and striking out eight.
?I was real pleased because we had a lot of confidence in the batter?s box,? Dalton coach Jeff McKinney said. ?We were hitting the ball better and didn?t have many errors and were very aggressive on the base paths.?
Murray County beat Coahulla Creek 5-1, lost to Pace 6-2, beat Holy Innocents? 9-3 and lost to Gordon Central 6-3 to finish sixth place.
