At the last home football game, there was a different atmosphere. Yes, the crowd was very excited about the football team continuing their journey into NCAA, but they were equally as excited because there was another team to help get them into that excitement- the APU cheerleading squad.
?I think they did a good job in terms of stunts at the first home game,? sophomore communications major Angela Pacheco said. ?The cheerleaders at the football game I felt were a support for the members of the blackout team that were there. When the guys from Blackout would start doing cheers, the cheerleaders would back them up and get more people involved.?
The APU cheerleading squad had a big effect on the game. The cheerleaders were also very excited and pumped because the team returned this year after not having a squad last year.
?It is nice to have the team back because it adds to the game experience,? head cheerleading coach Rosita Francis said. ?The first game went great. We look really good and we are performing well.?
Last year APU did not have a cheer squad because they wanted to try something different. For the most part, the Blackout crew was responsible for doing the cheerleading at games last year.
According to the APU athletic website, ?Blackout Crew is a group of student leaders with strong voices and big personalities,? and anyone who has been at a game can attest to that.
?It is fun to have a student organization,? Francis said.
Francis and Athletic Director Gary Pine felt that the Blackout Crew was great, but the university still needed an extra edge.
Pine and Francis wanted the cheer squad to return since APU is transitioning into NCAA.
According to the APU athletic website, the cheerleading squad is, ?comprised of students who support the athletic teams here on campus by generating crowd enthusiasm, promoting school spirit, and supporting our athletes throughout the year.?
The squad?s goals for this year are to cheer and support athletic teams, to get the crowds more involved and to encourage Cougar pride. They also want to show support to each team player academically and spiritually. The cheerleading squad?s main goal is to represent APU and Christ with excellence.
When APU announced that cheerleading was coming back to campus mostly everyone? was very excited.
When it came to tryouts, 50 girls showed up. Girls could try out in person in the Cougar Dome or opt to try out via video.
There were a lot of phone calls and upset parents who were disappointed because there was no cheer squad at APU, Francis said. Those parents, along with others, are very excited to see that it has returned.
This year, the team is motivated and looks forward to getting the crowd involved.
The squad is just like any other athletic team; they practice three times a week and condition twice a week.
?We have worked hard for this,? Francis said. ?It really is a sport they have to train just as hard in.?
The cheerleaders will be at every home football and basketball game, as well as select volleyball and soccer games. Baseball and softball games are still being discussed. Most everyone can agree, however, that the spirit of the cheerleaders will add to the success of our athletics this year.
